I was surprised at many of the references to H.P. Lovecraft and I think that Nick Blinko is a similar artist. The songs are all very short, and are definately best enjoyed with the lyrics at hand, to see what is going on. Great testament to the wisdom and creativity of Nick Blinko, whos fantastic and frightening artwork makes this CD even better. However, only four stars because it is a sound that is different to get used to. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Farce? (05 March 2006)Rudimentary Peni are amazing. Their sound goes from (as is here) unbelievably speedy punk (I cannot over-emphasize the speed) to much more obscure, toned and outright weird experimental mesh of sound as can be found in "Pope Adrian 37th." This album compiles all their earlier stuff and has a thoroughly blistering pace - 26 minutes of music with 23 tracks. If you've ever read "Primal Screamer" you'll understand what Nick's getting at with his description of his own music. Normally you can't understand punk - it's what it's about, attitude, anarchism and antics. This is amazing in a different way. You can barely hear a single word on first listening. Read some of the words and the whole thing becomes apparent, it is sheer genius crammed into short, sharp burts of intellectual power (although as "anarchists" [these guys would probably hate to use a label as such] they disagree with the concept). If you're unaccustomed to Rudimentary Peni and have come across Crass, Conflict and the usual suspects, listen to "Death Church" first as I find that one the easiest start and best lyrics ("Dutchmen" being my favourite song). However, if you fancy a challenge, a change and something to destroy whatever plastic-coated sound-system you're using - this will do the job. Superb piece of down-to-earth roots anarcho-punk. Thwack on "Media Person" and "Cosmetic Plague" and feel the transcendence of the music in comparison to other punk contemporaries. The Clash crash in the face of noticeably anarchistic, grounded punk music that keeps faith that there is another way. |
