| | Customer Reviews: A splendid way to celebrate Christmas (29 May 2009)These recordings from the mid to late 1950s are all very well recorded and sung by Mario Lanza, a talented tenor with a most beautiful, rich voice, warm sincerity and commendably clear diction. The performance of these Christmas carols and songs of faith and sentiment are likely to stand much rehearing to bring listeners a great deal of enjoyment. Please note if you would that there is also another recording, in the RCA "Living Stereo" series, containing re-recordings of much of this material, but made at a time when Mr Lanza was unwell (sadly, he died soon after) and also when the sound technicians seemed to be having a few off days. Ironically, that later series was promoted by makers and sellers (and still is) on the basis that it is in stereo, despite its having inferior sound quality to the earlier, then state of the art mono recordings contained in this currently reviewed CD. Good clear mono sound still beats not so good stereo. SUPER MARIO (13 March 2009)Was there ever a greater singer than Mario Lanza?, I believe he was certainly the most versatile and best all-rounder ever, and this peerless Christmas album is evidence of this. I've built an eclectic mix of Christmas albums over the years, but nothing apart from "Chris Squires Swiss Choir"(for very different reasons) comes anywhere near to this time-less classic, quite simply no-one has ever sung these traditional songs and carols better than the Great Man, no-one else can/could. If God created a singing voice it would sound just like this. If your looking for the definative Christmas Album then this is it, period. Buy now and dont look back, at this price its an absolute steal. The Best Christmas Record Of ALL Time (23 December 2008)Lanza made two Christmas albums, and here all the songs, hymns, carols and classical pieces are gathered in one SUPERB collection. I can think of no one on this earth who more evokes the spirit, essence and beauty of the Festive Season more than this man. He truly was sent before his time. Who cares that he was something of a louse to just about everyone who crossed his path. When Lanza sings, God comes out of his mouth whereas the Christmas offerings by Slade, Paul Potts, Live Aid, John Lennon et-all are all reduced to the quality of beer-mats. It is not possible to name a favorite. All the pieces here are beyond first class, and I see no reason why fans should not play it all year round. I do! Five-minute wonder tenors come and go--Potts again, the cute blond boy who is tone deaf--you know the one--and even Russell Watson and the gloriously and tackily commercialised Il Divo will eventually find themselves assigned to the distant "Oh, I think I remember them but I can't remember what they sang" annals of our minds, but Mario Lanza's magnificent voice and spellbinding talent will live on until the end of time. Christmas with Mario Lanza (01 October 2006)Christmas with Mario lanza isn't just songs you'll listen to at Christmas Time. Yes there are Christmas Carol's such as Joy to the World, Silent Night, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen and O Holy Night which reflect the true meaning of Christmas. However, the tracks I'll Walk with God and Guardian Angels, whilst on a Christmas album will be played at anytime during the year! The song I'll walk with God was written for the film The Student Prince and is closely associated with Mario Lanza. As is Guardian Angels which is really an evening prayer. Harpo Marx, of the famous Marx Brothers, set Gerda Beilenson's lyrics to music. This was my Mothers favourite Christmas album, and, I've bought this as an early Christmas present for my Father. To be honest having listened to it, and been reminded of the quality of Mario lanza's voice i'm reluctant to give it him! I guess i'll just have to order another copy for myself? The digital re-mastering has been sympathetic to the fact these recordings were made before noise-reduction methods such as dolby were available, and the full frequency of the content of the original recording has been retained which to my ear has made this a fantastic rich sounding album. If you're looking for an album of truly memorable Christmas songs, sung by a truely memorable singer and more, buy this. |
